Waterford House Fire: Murder Investigation Launched After Four Deaths

Updated: Tuesday, 13 October 2026

Gardaí have launched a murder investigation following a fatal house fire in Waterford city that claimed the lives of four people, including two children. Two other children have been taken to hospital with critical injuries, as the community struggles to absorb the scale of the tragedy.

The fire occurred at a house in the Birchwood estate in the early hours of Tuesday morning. Waterford Fire Service said it was alerted to the incident at Birchwood Avenue at 5.13am. Emergency services attended the scene, with firefighters, gardaí and ambulance personnel responding to the emergency.

Gardaí subsequently confirmed that an adult man, an adult woman and two children had died. The confirmation followed earlier reports that several people were feared to have lost their lives. The condition of the two surviving children adds to the concern surrounding an incident that has shocked Waterford and the wider country.

The investigation has now moved beyond the initial emergency response. Gardaí are treating the fatal fire as an arson attack and have commenced a murder inquiry. Anyone with information, particularly anyone who was near Birch Avenue or Birchwood during the early hours of Tuesday, is being asked to contact investigators. Information can be provided to Waterford Garda Station on 051 305300, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.

Earlier on Tuesday, the area was sealed off behind a large Garda cordon. Several fire brigade units attended, along with Gas Networks Ireland. The estate is situated approximately three kilometres outside Waterford city centre, where the emergency response became the focus of mounting concern throughout the morning.

Local representatives have spoken about the profound impact on residents. Waterford TD David Cullinane described the incident as “utterly heartbreaking”, saying there was devastation within the housing estate and shock across the wider city. His comments reflected the distress surrounding the unfolding news as the extent of the loss became clearer.

Minister of State John Cummins also expressed his sadness, describing Waterford as having been plunged into devastation following the overnight loss of life. The reaction from local representatives has centred on those affected and the emergency personnel who attended the scene during an exceptionally difficult morning.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin offered his sympathies to everyone affected and paid tribute to first responders. Speaking before Cabinet, he acknowledged that the full details were still emerging and appealed for emergency personnel and gardaí to be given space to carry out their work.

As this story develops, care is needed around information being shared publicly. Speculation about responsibility or motive should not be presented as established fact. The victims and their relatives deserve dignity, while the investigation must be allowed to establish what happened.

For now, the focus remains on the lives lost, the children receiving treatment and everyone affected by this devastating event. This report reflects information available on Tuesday afternoon. Further updates should follow verified statements from gardaí and emergency services as the investigation continues.
