Eight Goals, One Dream: Ireland's Women Take Giant Step Towards World Cup

Ireland's women's football team delivered a stunning statement of intent on Friday afternoon, demolishing Kazakhstan 8–0 in Astana and moving within touching distance of the final qualifying play-off for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup in Brazil.

Manager Carla Ward could hardly have asked for a better performance as her side dominated from the opening whistle, despite travelling without influential captain Katie McCabe and midfielder Denise O'Sullivan.

Kyra Carusa opened the scoring after just seven minutes, before Chloe Mustaki doubled Ireland's advantage. Carusa struck again before the half-hour mark, with Emily Murphy and Abbie Larkin adding further goals before the break.

Ireland refused to ease off in the second half. Jamie Finn, debutant Shanade Hopcroft and Jessie Stapleton completed the scoring, securing one of the country's biggest international victories.

Mustaki was particularly impressive, scoring her first international goal and contributing three assists, while Hopcroft enjoyed a dream debut with a goal of her own.

The Road to Brazil

Ireland entered the play-offs after finishing third in a challenging qualifying group featuring France, the Netherlands and Poland.

Their memorable 3–2 victory over the Netherlands in Cork demonstrated their ability to compete against Europe's strongest nations.

Friday's emphatic result leaves Ireland virtually certain of progressing to the final play-off round, where either Belgium or Poland awaits.

However, World Cup qualification is not yet secured. Ireland must complete the Kazakhstan tie before overcoming their next opponents to book a place in Brazil.

Cork Awaits the Girls in Green

Next Tuesday, October 13th, Ireland welcome Kazakhstan to Páirc Uí Chaoimh, with kick-off scheduled for 7.30pm.

The eight-goal advantage makes progression overwhelmingly likely, but the occasion represents another opportunity for Irish supporters to celebrate a team carrying the nation's World Cup ambitions.

Katie McCabe is available to return, providing another boost.

After making history with their first World Cup appearance in 2023, Ireland are determined to return to football's biggest stage.

Eight goals scored. One enormous dream alive. Brazil 2027 is getting closer.
