Dan Breen: The Man, the Trophy and the Jersey
Share
Every county final ends with a captain lifting a cup, teammates celebrating and supporters remembering a day that will live long in their parish. In Tipperary, that moment carries a familiar name: Dan Breen.
But behind the trophy is a man whose story reaches far beyond the hurling field. It is that connection between local history, county pride and identity that inspired our Dan Breen tribute jersey.
The man
Born near Donohill, County Tipperary, on 11 August 1894, Dan Breen became one of the best known figures of Ireland’s revolutionary period. He worked on the railway before becoming a prominent member of the South Tipperary Brigade.
On 21 January 1919, Breen took part in the Soloheadbeg ambush alongside fellow Volunteers, including Seán Treacy. Two Royal Irish Constabulary officers were killed. The ambush is widely regarded as the opening engagement of the Irish War of Independence, taking place on the same day the First Dáil assembled in Dublin.
Breen’s life subsequently took him from armed struggle into politics. He became a Fianna Fáil TD, and his memoir, My Fight for Irish Freedom, helped bring his account of the revolutionary years to a wider audience.
His legacy belongs to a difficult and often divisive chapter of Irish history. Understanding the man means remembering the conflict, its human cost and the events that shaped the country.
The trophy
The connection with Tipperary hurling began in 1931. A county final history records that the Tipperary team returned from an American tour with a cup presented by Dan Breen to the County Board.
Toomevara’s Martin Kennedy became its first winning captain that year. Since then, the Dan Breen Cup has become synonymous with the ambition of clubs throughout the county.
For players, lifting it represents years of training and sacrifice. For supporters, it means family memories, parish loyalty and the pride of seeing their own club crowned county champions.
